The hills are alive with the sound of Biomass HideJess P 01/11/2011 17:03

Granted Project Management Partner, Jess, spent 3 days in Upper Austria at the beginning of October touring the region to learn about the leading biomass infrastructure they have in place. The delegates comprised a group of 30 delegates, half from County Tipperary in Ireland and half from the Southwest of England. The group met in Linz and was pulled together by the Inteligent Energy Europe (IEE) funded FOREST project. The tour was led by the Energiesparverband (ESV) which is the authority responsible for providing services and promoting renewable energy and efficiency services in upper Austria.

Visits took place to 1.7MW biomass heating networks for factories and villages; powered by the local farmers. The majority of farmers in Upper Austria have 5-6 Ha of woodland within their farms and the wood chip is produced from thinning this. The networks normally have one large user, such as a school, which uses heat during the day and then the local houses use up the remaining heat produced.

A large scale woodchip producer (who had a lovely view of the mountains) makes use of his €500,000 wood chipper to provide woodchip to all size biomass users. He was visited by the delegates to talk about the supply chain and how sustainable providing fuel for the biomass systems can be. All of the chip is dried to the require 20% moisture content in open sided stores under a tin roof.

Time was spent visiting a €29 million new-build passivhaus standard agricultural college at the foot of the Alps. The building which scored 0.4 in the leekage test (0.6 is required for passivhaus standard) had 4,260m˛ of floor space and was fully heated by a 400kW biomass boiler and 90m˛ of solar thermal for hot water. The electricity was provided by 10kW of PV. The building which was completely clad in white pine was a showcase for the region. All the delegates, including Jess, were willing to go back to school if it could be in this one!

Granted shortlisted for prestigious DEBI awards Hide 28/10/2011 16:21

Granted are delighted to announce that we have been shortlisted for the prestigious Devon Environmental Business Initiative Awards 2011.

Under the category of Environmental Goods and Services, Granted were visited by DEBI judges on the 20th October, who did a fantastic job of scrutinising the facts and grilling the team on their application. However, facts and figures were not comparable to the experience the judges had from visiting the impressive EaRTH project based at Bicton Colleges Home Farm.

The Granted team are hoping that the tour of EaRTH, led by Jonathan Davis, Co-Director at Granted, will provide the judges with sufficient evidence to prove Granteds track record and commitment to the environmental technology industry.

Granted announce the appointment of their Carbon Strategy Partner Hide 29/09/2011 09:59

Granted Consultancy Ltd, leading independent consultants in renewable energy & funding in the South West, are pleased to announce the appointment of Tom Kennard as their Carbon Strategy Partner. Granted have had considerable success working across the private and public sector during the past three years conceiving, planning and delivering projects from small scale renewable energy installations through to £10million new build projects. Granted work with numerous architects at the design stage to ensure best practice for buildings looking to include renewable energy technologies. Already experts in grants and funding, education and impartial renewable energy advice, Tom's appointment demonstrates Granted's continued ambition and rapid expansion over the past three years, as well as their continued commitment towards providing a comprehensive service which spans the range of energy management expertise that the South West's business community need.
An undergraduate in Environmental Science and postgraduate in Applied Marine Science, Tom's career has projected him to the forefront of the sustainability, low carbon and environmental management agenda, both nationally and internationally. He has led assessments and energy audits on a variety of projects in the South West and further afield, including lead developer and implementer in the European wide EMS Easy Project. Tom has led sustainable business assessments and process analysis with large public and private sector bodies and SMEs. Rewarded for his innovation, Tom has twice been the winner of the Environment Agency's Environmental Innovation Award.
Anxious to make cost and carbon savings, the South West’s facilities managers and investors are short of holistic renewable energy advice. The Government is committed to reducing carbon emissions by 80% in 2050, which in real terms means that every unit of economic output will have to be produced emitting just one tenth of the CO2 currently emitted. Granted deconstruct and demystify the mythologies surrounding UK and EU grant applications, the installation of energy efficiency measures, effective behaviour change and renewable energy technologies. With the addition of Tom to the team Granted are now able to ensure companies are future proofed in their carbon performance and able to fully take advantage of the many opportunities the UKs Low Carbon Economy offers.

Eden Project Chief Executive commends EaRTH as a place of inspiration and hope for the future. Hide 11/05/2011 12:24

Granted, working with the Bicton College management team, are delighted to have received confirmation this week from the Skills Funding Agency of over £1.5m towards the development of the EaRTH hub.

This cash injection, secures the future of EaRTH which will become a new centre of excellence for renewable technologies. The EaRTH centre will offer Environmental Sustainability Diploma courses for school leavers and include a conferencing and interpretation facility to host events and give impartial renewable energy advice to local businesses, community groups and schools.

Tim Smit, chief executive and co-founder of the Eden Project, said: I think this is an important project. Our generation will, I hope, be remembered centuries from now as the one’s who understood the need to revisit the lessons of living with the grain of nature and who developed a new vision for what growth in the future might mean.
This will only happen if we have places of inspiration where the narrative of the future seems exciting and hopeful rather than bleak and hair shirt. This is why the EaRTH project is important.
It explores what sustainability may mean and seeks to inspire others to put thoughts into action and, most importantly, carries a hopeful message that together we can meet the challenges and emerge from the experience stronger and happier,  I commend it to you.

Bicton Earth Programme Hide 09/03/2011 14:59

Bicton College's management team engaged Granted to create a project which would reposition Bicton College into the sustainable arena in South West. Aware of the lack of training facilities dedicated to renewable technologies, Granted realised a real opportunity to specify a project which would meet the needs of the region and be attractive to funding bodies. Granted secured £400,000 in funding to develop and create the Bicton EaRTH Programme. The programme begins work in Spring 2011 and is situated at Home Farm, on the college campus, and will be built from two existing and underused farm buildings. The buildings will be retrofitted into a stunning energy educational facility. The electricity for the centre will be generated from a large solar PV array on the south facing roof, and the heat from a mixture of solar thermal panels, air source heat pumps and a biomass boiler. The entire centre has been designed with demonstration in mind, so you can touch the technology and see the information displays, showing the energy generation information in real time. The project is designed to encourage the next generation of energy users to engage and enquire about future energy issues, and the technologies that can help solve the issues is the core function of EaRTH. Bicton EaRTH will offer a ground breaking and off-grid venue for training in renewable technologies. The centre is expected to play an important role in filling a skills gap as demand for micro-generation technology grows.

Genesis Centre, Somerset College Hide 09/03/2011 14:47

Somerset College identified a need for a training hub to support the growing renewable energy sector in the south west. The Centre's goals are to deliver bespoke educational programmes and to provide exemplars of best practice in sustainable buildings. Their vision was to create an outstanding centre which embodied the technology it endorses, e.g. energy for the building is providing by ground heat pump, biomass boiler and utilises both Solar and PV arrays. Access to the roof and boiler rooms gives an authentic learning experience, where students get to handle the technologies in a working environment.

The converted centre offers a wide variety of courses all with renewable energy and sustainability at their core. These new facilities will engage a variety of new users including professionals, students, members of the public, community groups, and regional agencies.
